Simple Joys: Jasmine Tea

I think I’m going to start a new series on Monday mornings, called Simple Joys.

I’m not sure about you, but I always find it a little sad to leave the weekend behind – especially with summer weather at our door step. So, I’d thought I’d cheer myself up, and talk about the simple joys that I am able to enjoy on a daily basis to help the hectic work day along.

Today’s simple joy is Jasmine tea.

I love starting off a day with a cup of loose leaf steeped Jasmine tea. It’s like drinking in flowers.

Even though I have tried both “high end” and “low end” Jasmine tea, I only enjoy the “low end” stuff on a daily basis, and save the “high end” stuff for weekends.

“Low end” Jasmine tea is what I find in the local Asian supermarket and can be found at a net weight of 225 g for $3.99. This usually lasts me a good 2 -3 months at work. I usually brew a cup a day, and I re-steep them 2 or 3 times.

“High end” Jasmine tea was what I bought as part of a box set at a well known tea shop, Ten Ren. It was almost $28 for a box weighing 375 g.

I find that the high end tea leaves use whole leaves (see above photo) that are dried to curl up in bundle. They have a stronger and more flowery flavour, whereas the lower end teas have crumbly leaves and the flavour is not as strong. The aroma is completely different. You’ll know what the good stuff is 😉
